Community support

Locally-focused. Globally-minded.

Investing in the communities where we live and work

From supporting education at the grassroots level to combatting infectious diseases on a global scale, we are committed to investing in the communities in which we live and work. The following are just a few examples of the ways in which we endeavor to make positive and lasting contributions to people’s lives.

Supporting math and science education in the U.S.

We think all kids should be excited about math and science and the opportunities that will be available to them once they have that knowledge. That’s why we have invested in a variety of programs to advance math and science and close achievement gaps for underrepresented students.

  • The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy

We partnered with golfer Phil Mickelson and his wife Amy, to launch a weeklong course that helps primary school teachers learn new math and science teaching methods.

  • Introduce a Girl to Engineering

Employees act as role models and lead hands-on activities connecting math and science to real-life applications. The goal is to interest girls in a future career in engineering. Right now only 14% of engineering positions in the U.S. are held by women and yet women represent half of the workforce.

  • Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp

ExxonMobil partnered with former astronaut Bernard Harris to create a science camp for underrepresented and underserved middle-school students, to encourage diversity in the science and technology fields.

Volunteering in the community

To encourage employees to volunteer with charitable organizations in their local communities, ExxonMobil grants time off work for volunteering and makes a $500 donation to the organization on the employee’s behalf for every 20 hours spent volunteering. Some of the organizations our employees give their time to include United Way, Habitat for Humanity and Junior Achievement.

Global support for malaria prevention and control

Recognizing the devastating impact of malaria in some of the international communities where we work, ExxonMobil joined with nonprofit organizations in the fight against this deadly disease in 2000. Since then, malaria programs funded by ExxonMobil have reached more than 124 million people. Our support has helped distribute more than 13.5 million bed nets, 2.1 million doses of antimalarial treatments and 2.2 million rapid diagnostic kits, as well as trained more than 400,000 health workers.
