Product Description

The RUST-BAN line of rust preventives consists of two coatings designed for semi-permanent protection of metal surfaces, primarily in industrial applications. RUST-BAN 343 is an oil-based rust preventive and RUST-BAN 392 is a solvent cut-back rust preventive. These petroleum-based products are non-drying, as contrasted to paint products, which leave a hard film. In addition, RUST-BAN offers the advantages of being easy to apply, easy to remove, and low in cost compared to many paint-type coatings. Rust preventives are not rust removers. They should be applied only to clean surfaces that are free of dirt, grease, oil, moisture, and rust.

Unless testing proves them to be compatible with such materials, petroleum-base rust preventives should not be applied to non-metallic parts such as those fabricated of rubber, cork, paper, leather, fabric, or plastics. Some of these materials may swell, soften, or otherwise be affected.

Features and Benefits

The RUST-BAN products have been designed to provide outstanding protection of metal surfaces subjected to mild conditions. They leave non-drying semi-permanent films that are not only easy to apply but easy to remove.

The RUST-BAN products offer the following benefits:

  • Outstanding protection of exterior and interior surfaces of a wide range of equipment
  • Provide semi-permanent non-drying protective films
  • Easy to apply and remove
  • Low cost

Applications

  • RUST-BAN 343 is an oil-based rust preventive used primarily as a slushing oil for thin-gauge steel. It is also well suited for in-shipment protection of the interior surfaces of equipment such as crankcases and gear boxes. The product should be drained before installing the lubricant. However, it is not generally necessary to wipe residual product from the interior surfaces
  • RUST-BAN 392 is a solvent-cutback rust preventive that leaves a translucent to semi-transparent protective film after the evaporation of the petroleum solvent. It is recommended for indoor storage of parts under mild conditions, parts waiting assembly, items well packed for shipment and parts in process (RUST-BAN 392 displaces soluble oil). It can also be used as a penetrating fluid

Health and Safety

Based on available information, this product is not expected to produce adverse effects on health when used for the intended application and the recommendations provided in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) are followed. MSDS's are available upon request through your sales contract office, or via the Internet. This product should not be used for purposes other than its intended use. If disposing of used product, take care to protect the environment.

Precautions
Care should be taken to avoid skin contact when handling or applying rust preventives and to prevent splashing into the eyes. Protective splash goggles should be worn, and chemical-resistant gloves and apron should be used, if necessary to avoid repeated skin contact. If spraying the material, a respirator approved for use in the application of paint should be used.

Under some conditions, oils and greases in repeated contact with the skin can lead to skin irritation or dermatitis. Therefore, they should be promptly removed from the skin with a waterless hand cleaner followed by washing with soap, water, and a soft skin brush. Similarly, soiled clothing should not remain in contact with the skin. The RUST-BAN products can be removed from clothing by dry-cleaning or by washing with laundry detergent. If petroleum products contact the eyes, flush eyes with fresh water until irritation subsides.

When protective products are applied by spray, proper precautions, as established by the National Fire Protection Association, or by local authorities, should betaken to minimise fire hazards. RUST-BAN 392 contains a combustible solvent. This grade of RUST-BAN should be kept away from heat, sparks, and open flames. Care should be taken to avoid breathing the solvent vapour mist. RUST-BAN 392 should be applied only where adequate ventilation (equivalent to outdoors) can be provided. Because of possible inhalation toxicity, it is important to control the vapour concentration in the workplace atmosphere to ensure that the recommended occupational exposure limit (OEL) of the product in use is not exceeded.

Overexposure to vapour or liquid may cause headaches, dizziness or other adverse nervous system effects or damage, including death. WARNING: "Empty" containers retain residue (liquid and/or vapour) and can be dangerous. Do not pressurise, weld, cut, braze, solder, drill, grind or expose such containers to heat, flame, sparks, or other sources of ignition; they may explode and cause injury or death. Do not attempt to clean since residue is difficult to remove, and even a trace of remaining material constitutes an explosive hazard. "Empty" drums should be completely drained, properly bunged, and promptly returned to a drum reconditioner. All other containers should be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner and in accordance with governmental regulations.
