Product Description
DORTAN N is the trademark for a line of compounded cutting oils whose transparency permits a full view of the work. Though the DORTAN N grades differ somewhat in color, all give transparent films in service. Covering a wide range of machining operations, DORTAN N oils are formulated with various proportions of sulfur, chlorine and fatty materials for moderate-to-severe service. In addition, they contain a mist suppressant to minimize fogging and stray mist in the workplace.
The base oils from which DORTAN N is made have low pour points that facilitate handling when these products are stored at low temperatures. Their relatively high flash points help prevent smoking in service. Sulfur and other active agents are combined with the oil to impart the finest machining properties without promoting separation or settling.
Features and Benefits
DORTAN N lubricants offer the following features and benefits for machining copper, bronze, brass, aluminum and ferrous alloys:
- Transparent, active-sulfur and non-active sulfur cutting oils
- Contain mist suppressant additive
- Low pour point
- Available in various viscosity grades
Applications
DORTAN N 34
This grade is a moderate to heavy-duty cutting oil used generally on medium- to low-machinability steel or titanium. It is also a good form- and thread-grinding oil for hard steels. For copper-bearing alloys, staining might be objectionable unless DORTAN N 34 is removed immediately upon the completion of the machining process.
DORTAN N 36
This grade is an extremely heavy-duty active-sulfur-type cutting oil. It is used on steels of the most difficult machinability, including all types of stainless and heat-resistant steels. It can be used, too, in the heaviest and most severe machining operations, such as difficult gear shaping and internal broaching jobs. DORTAN N 36 is also an excellent form- and thread-grinding oil for the soft, tough or stringy steel alloys. For less critical applications, DORTAN N 36 can be cut back with a light mineral oil, such as the lighter grades of FAXAM® or CORAY®.
By varying the concentrations, the operator can adapt this one fluid to the full range of ferrous-metal cutting requirements, thereby eliminating the need for additional grades.
DORTAN N 53
DORTAN N 53 is a multi-purpose, non-staining product that can be used as a hydraulic oil, machine tool lubricant and cutting oil. Its versatility makes it an excellent choice for screw cutting lathes and other cutting machinery for which the equipment manufacturer may recommend a single multi-functional product.
The principal applications of DORTAN N 53 are:
Boring, internal breaching and reaming of non-ferrous metals;
Cutting and tapping (phosphorus bronze and durable brass);
Machining of ferrous and non-ferrous metals of easy machinability in such operations as turning, boring, milling, and high-speed screw cutting.
DORTAN N 53 contains no active sulfur. Its non-staining EP additives offer distinct advantages in the cutting and machining of metals that are susceptible to staining, such as copper, alloys, brass, special bronzes and mild steel.
METHOD OF APPLICATION
As with any cutting oil, DORTAN N oils should be applied copiously, thoroughly flooding the work and tool area. A broad, slow stream to the work is preferable to a thin, high-speed stream.

Health and Safety
When handling metalworking fluids, care should be taken to prevent them from contacting the skin or splashing into the eyes. Oils and greases in contact with the skin can plug sweat glands and hair follicles, which may lead to dermatitis. Accordingly, good personal hygiene should always be practiced. Oil and grease should be removed from the skin promptly with a waterless hand cleaner, followed by washing with soap, water and a soft skin brush. Soiled clothing should be removed promptly and dry cleaned or washed with laundry detergent before reuse.
Safety glasses, a face shield or similar protection should be worn and normal safety practices followed to prevent fluid, fine metal chips or abrasive particles from entering the eyes. If fluid is splashed into the eyes, immediately flush the eyes for 15 minutes with fresh water.
WARNING: "Empty" containers retain residue (liquid and/or vapor) and can be dangerous. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind or expose such containers to heat, flame, sparks or other sources of ignition; they may explode and cause injury or death. Do not attempt to clean since residue is difficult to remove, and even a trace of remaining material constitutes an explosive hazard. "Empty" drums should be completely drained, properly bunged and promptly returned to a drum reconditioner. All containers should be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner and in accordance with governmental regulations.
